Republic Polytechnic and Mil-Com Aerospace Training Center to Launch Specialist Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance

2008, February 26 Singapore: Starting June 2008, a new Specialist Diploma programme to train on aircraft maintenance engineering will commence with a projected intake of 25 students. The Specialist Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance under Republic Polytechnic’s (RP) School of Engineering is made possible by the collaborative agreement between Republic Polytechnic and Mil-Com Aerospace Training Center.

Students under the new specialist diploma will get their training in key aircraft related areas such as Avionics, Aerodynamics, Materials and Hardware, and Aviation Legislation. Being the first diploma introduced by both Singapore entities, graduates from this course are expected to fill in the growing demand for skilled aircraft maintenance personnel in the regional aviation sector. This 18-month course will prepare students for the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License examinations. To ensure that the diploma is relevant and in line with the industry needs, the training programme has been tailored to conform to CAAS’ Singapore Airworthiness Requirements (SAR) 66 standards.

Training and education departments from both parties have been working together to formulate the necessary syllabus for this full time 1.5 year specialist diploma using CAAS’ certified courses currently conducted by Mil-Com Aerospace Training Center and incorporating an On-the-Job Training (OJT) element. RP and Mil-Com are now discussing with several Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul companies and airlines such as ST Aviation Services Company to seek their participation on places for OJT.

Commenting on the new diploma, Prof Low Teck Seng, Principal and CEO of RP said, “This new diploma marks an important milestone in the growth of the aerospace industry in Singapore. For RP, this is a significant development as the partnership with a leading aerospace engineering and aviation training company testifies to our pro-industry stance.”
Eugene Lim, President/CEO of Mil-Com Aerospace Group is of view that this collaboration will be a step forward in enhancing Singapore as the regional aerospace training hub and in providing trained manpower to sustain the growth in the regional aviation industry.
